You will not find them living in the dust on your bookshelf or in the dust on your hard surface floors.  They can not survive on the surface of things.  They must live inside burrowing and digging deep into carpet, upholstery and the fabric of some other furniture, etc. 

A good cleaning will remove & discourage dust mites from living in your home.  It is the excreated matter from these pests that do the most damage to people in the form of having allergies, allergy symptoms and the resulting coughing, sneezing & red eye etc.
